Many farmers use pesticides to reduce the risk of contamination from pests, weeds and other potential carriers of disease. There are many types of pesticides, including: herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and disinfectants. These pesticides are easily absorbed into the food you will end up putting on your plate. Pesticides can potentially cause detrimental effects for humans, ranging from mild symptoms such as stomach pains and headaches, to serious health conditions such as cancer and infertility. Organic farmers do not use synthetic pesticides. Legally they must only use organic pesticides and natural methods for preventing contamination in order to classify their food as organic. Since organic food does not contain any unnatural substances, it is safer to consume than non-organic produce. Parents of babies and young children may opt for organically grown food as it reduces the chance of infection and illnesses, and also helps promote healthy development.

Why would farmers want to alter the natural growth of crops and animals by genetically modifying them? Farmers want to increase productively, decrease growing time, and make their food appealing and attractive to consumers. Organic food is often more expensive because they allow nature to do the job alone, which takes time, patience, and sometimes undesirable results. It may not always look as colorful, perfectly shaped and appealing as non-organic alternatives, but wouldn’t you want to pay just a little more money to eat food that’s completely natural and won’t be detrimental to your health?

Non-organic food may win against organic food in a beauty contest, but it certainly won’t win in a taste test. If you’ve ever tasted organic strawberries, for example, you’ll know that they are often far superior in taste compared to genetically modified strawberries. Why do you think so many top chefs opt for organic food in their restaurants?
Organic farming aims to work with nature in order to grow food. It does not damage the earth and is an ecological way of growing and harvesting crops year after year. The chemicals used in non-organic farming can wear away soil, and remain in the earth for hundreds of years. More chemicals need to be created and distributed in order to replace the chemicals that become ineffective at preventing contamination, which is not sustainable farming. A healthy environment means healthy food and healthy people!
