Healthy Snacks to Keep at the Office
Modern offices are a prime location for unhealthy, high-calorie snacks. Between the vending machine stocked with junk food and soda, the giant bowl of candy at reception, and the never-ending parade of birthday cakes in the break room, every work day in a typical office is chock full of temptation. When you forget your lunch or that afternoon slump hits, you may find yourself reaching for a sugar or junk food fix without even thinking about it.
Those empty calories can really add up, and can easily lead to weight gain. You don’t have to succumb to temptation, though. Try keeping a few non-perishable, healthy snacks stashed in your office or desk drawer. The next time you find yourself working through lunch or struggling through a mid-afternoon crash, reach for these healthy options instead of noshing on junk.
• Nuts – Nuts provide a quick boost of energy via their fat content. They’re also loaded with protein and fiber, which will helps you feel fuller longer. Nuts are a great source of several nutrients like vitamin E, potassium, and magnesium, too. Avoid salted or honey-roasted nuts when you can, opting for raw or toasted nuts instead.
• Salmon or tuna pouches & whole wheat crackers – Salmon & tuna are great sources of protein, while the whole wheat crackers are a great source of carbohydrate. This combination will fill you up and keep you feeling full more than a slice of birthday cake or potato chips from the vending machine ever could. The fish also provide an added bonus to your health in the form of Omega-3 fatty acids.
• Fruit – While not all fruits can be kept at room temperature for very long, fruits like apples, pears, oranges, and bananas should stay fresh for at least the length of an average work week. Low-sugar fruit cups or applesauce are great non-perishable alternatives to fresh fruit. Apples and pears are particularly excellent sources of fiber, so they’re generally the most filling options, but any fruit that you like to eat will make a fine choice.
• Protein bars – While some protein bars are actually higher in calories and sugar than an average candy bar, they are incredibly convenient as they will stay fresh in their packaging for months. They can still work as a healthy snack if you choose wisely: Avoid protein bars high in sugar and calories. Also, you’d be surprised how many products marketed as “protein bars” are actually very low in protein, so make sure you select a high-protein variety to help yourself feel full.
Everyone gets hungry at work from time to time, but it can sometimes seem impossible to find healthy choices to satisfy your hunger. You shouldn’t ever have to worry about finding a healthy snack option at work. Try keeping nuts, salmon or tuna pouches with whole wheat crackers, fruit, and protein bars on hand, and you’ll always have a healthy snack option at the ready.
