What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions characterized by irregular eating habits and extreme preoccupations with body weight, shape, and diet. These disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and others, each presenting unique symptoms and health risks. Individuals may engage in restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, or a combination of these behaviors. Eating disorders can lead to severe physical, emotional, and social consequences, affecting overall well-being and quality of life. Early intervention, therapy, and nutritional support are crucial for recovery and managing these complex disorders, emphasizing the importance of mental health in relation to eating behaviors.

Eating disorders are serious behavior problems. Women are more likely than men to have eating disorders. They usually start in the teenage years and often occur along with depression, anxiety disorders and substance abuse.

Eating Disorders include: - Anorexia nervosa, in which you become too thin, but you don't eat enough because you think you are fat. - Bulimia nervosa, involving periods of overeating followed by purging, sometimes through self-induced vomiting or using laxatives. - Binge-eating, which is out-of- control eating.

Eating disorders can cause heart and kidney problems and even death. Getting help early is important. Treatment involves monitoring, mental health therapy, nutritional counseling and sometimes medicines.
