What Are Dietary Minerals?

Dietary minerals are inorganic nutrients that are essential for various physiological processes in the body. They are classified into two categories: macrominerals and trace minerals. Macrominerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are required in larger amounts, while trace minerals, like iron, zinc, and selenium, are needed in smaller quantities. These minerals play crucial roles in bone health, enzyme function, nerve transmission, and fluid balance. They are obtained through a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and animal products. A deficiency or excess of specific minerals can lead to health problems, highlighting their importance in nutrition.
