What is Dietary Fat?
Dietary fats are one of the three macronutrients essential for human health, alongside carbohydrates and proteins. Composed of fatty acids and glycerol, fats serve several critical functions, including providing concentrated energy, supporting cell structure, and aiding the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). There are various types of dietary fats, including saturated, unsaturated (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), and trans fats. Unsaturated fats, found in foods like olive oil and avocados, are generally considered healthier, while excessive consumption of saturated and trans fats can lead to health issues, such as heart disease and obesity. Balancing fat intake is key to a healthy diet.
